Apple has issued an urgent security advisory urging iPhone users to update their devices after discovering two serious software vulnerabilities, describing the attacks as “extremely sophisticated.”
In an advisory released this week, Apple said the flaws affect WebKit, the browser engine that powers Safari as well as all third-party browsers on iOS. The vulnerabilities could allow attackers to execute malicious code simply by visiting a compromised website.
Apple confirmed that the vulnerabilities are being actively exploited, but stressed that the attacks appear to be highly targeted rather than widespread.
“These exploits are likely to be carried out in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals,” Apple said in the advisory.
To address the issue, Apple has released urgent software updates for iPhones, iPads, and other Apple devices. Users have been strongly advised to install the latest updates immediately to ensure their devices remain secure.
Although some reports have suggested that the warning applies to all of Apple’s estimated 1.8 billion iPhone users worldwide, cybersecurity experts have noted that the attacks identified by Apple do not indicate a large-scale risk affecting a significant number of devices.
Apple has not disclosed who was behind the attacks or the identities of those targeted, citing security concerns. The company said it is continuing to investigate the incidents and reiterated the importance of keeping devices updated with the latest security measures.
