Former UNP Deputy Leader, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has raised questions regarding the government’s handling of the recent cyclone disaster and the state of the country’s finances.
Speaking to the media, MP Karunanayake said the Central Bank’s reserves were expected to reach USD 7.2 billion by the end of this year, and he questioned whether that target has been met. He also asked whether the Central Bank has maintained its independence in decision-making.
The MP noted that while the President has instructed the provision of relief to those affected by Cyclone Ditva, the Central Bank Governor has reportedly suggested offering loans instead of direct aid.
“Steps must be taken by the government and the Central Bank to explain this situation clearly to the public,” MP Karunanayake said, urging transparency and accountability in handling both disaster relief and national reserves.
