Low-Pressure Area Forms in Bay of Bengal, Heavy Rains Expected from January 8

January 6, 2026

A low-level atmospheric disturbance in the Bay of Bengal, southeast of Sri Lanka, has intensified into a low-pressure area, the Department of Meteorology announced.

As a result, showery conditions across the island—particularly in the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Uva and Central provinces—are expected to intensify from January 8, 2026.

Showers will occur at times in the Eastern, Central, Uva, North-Central and Northern provinces. Heavy rainfall of around 100 mm is likely at some locations in Uva Province and in the Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara districts, the department said.

Elsewhere in the island, showers or thundershowers may occur at several places after 1.00 p.m.

Meanwhile, strong winds of up to 50 kmph are expected at times over the eastern slopes of the central hills, as well as in the Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Eastern provinces, and in the Hambantota, Gampaha, Colombo and Monaragala districts.

The general public is advised to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning associated with thundershowers.
