According to the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Ambassador Julie Chung is scheduled to conclude her tenure and depart Sri Lanka on January 16, after serving as the country’s top U.S. diplomat for nearly four years.
Reflecting on her time in Sri Lanka, Ambassador Chung said she deeply valued her experience and the progress achieved during her tenure. “I cherish every moment I spent in Sri Lanka. From day one, my focus has been on advancing America’s interests, strengthening our security partnerships, expanding trade and investment, and promoting education and democratic values that strengthen both our countries. Together, we have built a relationship that delivers results for the American people and supports a free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific,” she said in a statement announcing her departure.
Following her departure, Deputy Chief of Mission Jane Howell, A.I., will assume duties as Acting U.S. Ambassador until a new ambassador is appointed.
Ambassador Chung assumed office in February 2022. Her tenure was marked by several significant milestones, including the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United States and Sri Lanka in 2023, the return of U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers to Sri Lanka in 2024, and the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, the U.S. Embassy noted.
