Sri Lanka Launches Voluntary Drug Rehabilitation Program with Vocational Training

January 28, 2026

Sri Lanka has launched a voluntary drug rehabilitation program that includes vocational training to help individuals addicted to narcotics recover and reintegrate into the workforce, Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Brigadier M. S. Amith said.

Brigadier Amith stated that participants will undergo a structured three-month rehabilitation process comprising counseling, supervision, and recovery support. After completing the program, they will receive vocational training to develop practical skills and improve their chances of obtaining stable employment.

He urged those struggling with narcotics addiction to come forward, emphasizing that early intervention can help rebuild lives and reduce long-term social and economic harm.

Authorities noted that rehabilitation and reintegration programs are a key part of Sri Lanka’s broader efforts to address drug abuse, promote public health, and maintain community stability.

The government has also announced plans to establish 10 voluntary rehabilitation centers across the country for addicts.
