Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says that political progress is difficult when a party is divided, as has happened with the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
The MP added that he believes the majority within both parties now understand this reality.
He also pointed out that certain groups, unexpectedly, have taken undue advantage of the split in one of the country’s strong political parties.
The MP noted that the new political philosophy emerging from the division has not been widely accepted, which contributed to setbacks for both parties in the recent elections.
