Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake says the government must act responsibly and with awareness when dealing with the International Monetary Fund.
Speaking to the media, the MP questioned Sri Lanka’s failure to request the sixth tranche of IMF assistance in the aftermath of the damage caused by Cyclone Ditva.
He noted that an agreement is already in place with the IMF, and that natural disasters or other external factors should not affect its implementation.
The MP emphasized that the priority now should be to find ways to inject funds into the economy.
He also stated that cutting unnecessary expenses is essential to save money, suggesting that even MPs’ insurance should be reduced during a national disaster.
He pointed out that MPs do not require insurance when many citizens are struggling to find food, and that insurance is unnecessary if MPs do not need new vehicles or official residences.
