WhatsApp Begins Rolling Out Usernames, Allowing Users to Connect Without Sharing Phone Numbers

June 30, 2026

WhatsApp has begun rolling out its long-awaited username feature, allowing eligible users to reserve a unique username ahead of its wider global launch later this year.

According to an in-app announcement, the new feature is expected to change the way people connect on the platform, shifting conversations from asking, “What’s your number?” to simply, “What’s your WhatsApp?”

Eligible users can reserve their preferred username by updating to the latest version of the app and navigating to Settings > Account > Username, where the feature has started appearing for selected accounts.

The introduction of usernames is designed to enhance user privacy by enabling people to communicate on WhatsApp without having to share their phone numbers in many situations.

WhatsApp said the feature is being released gradually, meaning it may not yet be available to all users. The company plans to expand availability over the coming months before a broader rollout later this year.

In a statement, parent company Meta said:

“Once we launch usernames, when you message a person or business for the first time, they will no longer see your phone number if you have enabled your username. Reserving your optional username takes just a few seconds on the latest version of WhatsApp by going to Settings > Account > Username. We’ll be rolling out usernames gradually over the coming months and will notify you in WhatsApp when they’re available in your country.”

The feature is expected to provide users with greater control over their privacy while making it easier to connect with individuals and businesses without exchanging personal phone numbers.
