Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake questioned the ruling party in Parliament under Standing Orders regarding a proposal to convert the lump sum gratuity of the Employees Provident Fund into a pension scheme.
He said that a Deputy Minister had made a public statement on the proposal on the 7th.
According to the MP, the statement caused widespread concern and unrest among private sector employees, pensioners and trade union members.
Karunanayake also pointed out that the proposal was not new, noting that a similar controversial move in 2011 had resulted in the death of a person.
