President’s Orders Ignored as Thousands Still Await Compensation, Ravi Says

February 3, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and MP Ravi Karunanayake has raised an inquiry under Standing Orders 27(2), seeking an urgent government statement on compensation payments and rehabilitation efforts for people affected by the cyclone, including those who suffered deaths, loss of homes, and property damage.

He pointed out that although the President had directed officials to complete compensation payments by December 31, many affected families continue to complain about delays, non-payment, bounced cheques, and unresolved insurance claims.

The MP also said media reports indicate that tens of thousands of people are still unable to return to their homes.

He stressed that the government must take the hardships faced by disaster-affected communities seriously and act immediately to resolve these issues.
