Government That Lost Cooperative Elections Fears Provincial Polls, Says Ravi

February 20, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party and Parliamentarian Ravi Karunanayake has claimed that the government is reluctant to hold provincial council elections after losing recent cooperative elections.

Speaking to the media regarding ongoing discussions and reports about provincial council polls, the MP said there is no need to submit special requests to hold the elections, as they are constitutionally due.

He emphasized that the government should proceed with the provincial council elections without delay, noting that when the current administration was in opposition, it had pledged not to postpone elections.

The MP further stated that the general opposition has been securing victories in several cooperative elections, arguing that these results clearly reflect the direction of public opinion.
