Former UNP Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has stated that government decisions taken amid the current global crisis are having the greatest impact on people who depend on monthly wages.
Speaking at a media briefing, he said that if the government is unable to provide broad relief, it should at least introduce measures to help people maintain their living standards.
He noted that price increases in Sri Lanka are affecting a wide range of goods and services, and warned that such across-the-board hikes are not appropriate when compared to global trends.
Karunanayake pointed out that rising fuel prices and electricity tariffs are placing a heavier economic burden on the public.
He emphasized that salaried individuals are particularly vulnerable, as they struggle to cope with these rising costs within fixed incomes, and urged the government to provide targeted relief for ordinary citizens.
