Trump Warns Strait Blockade Will Continue, Threatens Renewed Strikes on Iran

April 18, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned that the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place and military strikes could resume if no agreement is reached with Iran.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said he may not extend the current ceasefire, adding that continued deadlock could lead to renewed bombing operations.

Despite the warning, he expressed optimism that a deal could still be reached, stating, “I think it’s going to happen.”

Iran, meanwhile, has claimed that the strait has been reopened to commercial vessels but warned it could shut it again if the U.S. maintains its blockade of Iranian ships and ports.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global energy route, handling around 20% of the world’s oil shipments, and uncertainty over its status continues to raise concerns in global markets.

Questions remain over the actual level of access for ships, as tensions persist despite a temporary truce in the region.

Trump also rejected any suggestion that Iran could impose tolls or restrictions on vessels using the strait, firmly dismissing the idea.

The ongoing conflict has resulted in significant casualties across the region, underscoring the high stakes of the situation and the urgency of a diplomatic resolution.
