UK Parliament Approves Tobacco and Vapes Bill to Create ‘Smoke-Free Generation

April 24, 2026

The Parliament of the United Kingdom has approved the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, marking a major step toward creating a “smoke-free generation” in the United Kingdom.

Under the new law, individuals aged 17 or under will never be legally allowed to purchase cigarettes. The legislation applies to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009, meaning access to tobacco products will gradually decline over time.

The bill is set to become law once it receives royal assent from King Charles III.

In addition to tobacco restrictions, the legislation grants the government expanded powers to regulate vaping and nicotine-related products, including their flavourings, packaging, and sale.

New measures also impose tighter controls on vaping. It will be banned in vehicles carrying children, as well as in playgrounds, outside schools, and near hospitals. However, vaping will still be permitted in certain designated outdoor hospital areas to support individuals attempting to quit smoking.

Smoking and vaping will remain allowed in some outdoor settings, including private homes, restaurant gardens, and beaches.

The British government has described the legislation as one of the most significant efforts in recent years to reduce smoking-related illnesses and deaths.
