Sri Lanka Government Plans to Facilitate Women Leading Armed Forces, Says State Minister of Defense

State Minister of Defense, Premitha Bandara Tennakoon, announced on Monday that the Sri Lankan government is actively considering initiatives to empower women to assume leadership roles in the army, navy, and air force.

Addressing the parliament, Tennakoon highlighted the current limitation where women, particularly in the army, can only attain the rank of major. However, he revealed that the government is in the process of amending military laws to facilitate the promotion of women, eventually enabling them to take on leadership positions in all three branches of the armed forces.

Tennakoon emphasized the historical contributions of women in Sri Lanka and stressed the need for the nation to take significant steps towards ensuring gender equality. The proposed changes signify a commitment to recognizing and enhancing the role of women in the defense sector, marking a significant shift in the country’s military landscape. Source: Xinhua
