A 31-year-old man has been charged with attempting to assassinate U.S. President Donald Trump following a security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington D.C..
The suspect, identified as Cole Thomas Allen of California, was arraigned on Monday and faces multiple charges, including firearms-related offences.
According to prosecutors, the suspect was carrying a semi-automatic handgun, an additional firearm, and three knives when he passed a security checkpoint at the event held at the Washington Hilton Hotel on Saturday.
Authorities allege that he attempted to attack a U.S. Secret Service agent during the incident. The agent was not seriously injured.
During the incident, President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, Cabinet members, and other officials were immediately evacuated from the venue after gunshots were heard.
If convicted, the suspect could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
Court reports indicate that the accused appeared calm during proceedings, responding briefly to questions and confirming he holds a master’s degree.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
