Court Grants Sri Lanka CERT Permission to Inspect Postal Department Over Disputed USD Transaction

May 6, 2026

The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court has granted permission for the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team to conduct an on-site inspection at the Department of Posts Sri Lanka as part of an investigation into a disputed foreign currency transaction.

The inquiry concerns an alleged incident in which a payment of USD 626,555 made by the Postal Department to the United States Postal Service was reportedly redirected to a third party.

The progress of the investigation was presented today (06) before Magistrate Pasan Amaraseena by the Criminal Investigation Department Sri Lanka.

According to the CID, international postal transactions are typically conducted through official email accounts provided under the framework of the Universal Postal Union.

However, investigators informed court that the disputed payments had allegedly been processed through an external email account outside the approved system.

The CID further stated that the funds had been transferred in two separate transactions using the external email communication channel.

Following submissions by investigators, the Magistrate approved the request allowing Sri Lanka CERT to proceed with the technical inspection as investigations continue.
