Wang Yi has called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as possible” during talks in Beijing with Abbas Araghchi.
The meeting marked Araghchi’s first visit to China since the outbreak of the Iran war.
According to Chinese state media, Wang Yi stressed that achieving a lasting ceasefire is an “urgent priority” and said negotiations must continue to prevent renewed conflict. He also stated that China is prepared to help de-escalate tensions.
Wang further emphasized the importance of restoring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, noting that the international community is increasingly concerned about disruptions to global shipping and energy supplies.
The discussions come ahead of a planned summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping next week, where the Iran conflict and the reopening of the strait are expected to be key topics.
China has repeatedly urged both the United States and Iran to continue diplomatic negotiations and avoid further escalation.
During the meeting, Wang also acknowledged Iran’s stated commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, according to reports from Chinese media.
Meanwhile, Araghchi reportedly said cooperation between China and Iran would continue to strengthen.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global trade route, carrying a significant share of the world’s oil exports. Ongoing restrictions and military tensions in the region have contributed to rising oil prices and global economic uncertainty.
