Vijay, leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday (May 10, 2026), marking a major political shift in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony was held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Chennai at 10:00 a.m., where Vijay took the oath alongside nine other ministers, including several senior TVK leaders.
The development brings an end to nearly six decades of alternating rule by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally appointed Vijay as Chief Minister-designate after he secured the backing of 120 MLAs in the 234-member Assembly.
TVK will lead a coalition government with support from the Indian National Congress and several allied parties.
The Governor has directed Vijay to prove his majority in the Assembly on or before May 13.
Political uncertainty surrounding government formation ended after the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and the Indian Union Muslim League extended support to TVK, taking the alliance tally to 120 seats.
Vijay later met the Governor at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and submitted letters of support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
