May 14, 2026

The government of Australia, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, is set to allocate $25.3 million in the 2026–27 budget to deepen business and strategic relations with India.

According to the Australian government, the funding forms part of the next phase of the Australia–India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The investment is expected to:

  • Help Australian businesses gain better access to India’s expanding market
  • Create new cooperation opportunities through the Maitri Grants Program
  • Strengthen maritime security cooperation in the Indian Ocean

Canberra stated that the initiative builds on what it described as “unprecedented progress” in Australia–India relations across strategic, economic, and people-to-people connections.

India has increasingly become a central part of Australia’s Indo-Pacific strategy, with the two countries expanding cooperation in:

  • Trade and investment
  • Education
  • Clean energy
  • Technology
  • Defence and regional security

The funding is also expected to help Australian companies diversify export markets and strengthen commercial partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.
