Traders will be prohibited from providing customers with free Low-Density Polyethylene (LDPE) or Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) bags, commonly known as ‘sili-sili’ bags, when purchasing goods.
The Consumer Affairs Authority said the measure has been introduced under Directive No. 95, published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2456/41 dated October 1, 2025. The directive will come into effect on November 1, 2025.
Under the new regulations, traders who provide such bags must charge a specific price, which must be clearly displayed at the business premises. The amount charged must also be clearly included in the customer’s bill.
Traders are additionally required to maintain proper records of purchase bills, invoices and supplier details relating to the bags they obtain.
The Consumer Affairs Authority warned that legal action will be taken against traders who violate the directive.
The Authority also urged consumers to carry reusable bags whenever possible to reduce unnecessary polyethylene use and help protect the environment.
