Government Plans Stronger Cybersecurity Laws to Combat Rising Online Fraud

May 18, 2026

The Ministry of Public Security Sri Lanka says steps are being taken to strengthen cybersecurity laws in Sri Lanka in response to the growing number of online fraud cases reported across the country.

According to officials, the government plans to introduce amendments to the Online Safety Act to address fraud and criminal activities carried out through digital platforms.

New regulations are also expected to be introduced under the proposed Gambling Regulatory Authority Act to prevent criminals from using online gambling platforms for fraudulent operations.

Meanwhile, the government is developing a high-security firewall system with support from the Ministry of Digital Economy Sri Lanka.

Officials stated that the system will be used to protect sensitive information and digital infrastructure belonging to institutions including:

  • Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka
  • Department of Immigration and Emigration Sri Lanka
  • Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka
  • Ceylon Petroleum Corporation

Authorities explained that if one institution comes under a cyberattack, the firewall system will immediately alert connected agencies.

In addition, the government plans to establish a specialized police cybercrime unit operating under a Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The proposed unit is expected to function across all provinces using advanced technology to monitor and investigate online fraud operations, including activities linked to foreign cybercrime groups operating within Sri Lanka.
