Sri Lanka Records Around 2,000 Blood Cancer Cases Annually

May 18, 2026

Sri Lanka records approximately 2,000 new blood cancer cases each year, according to the Blood Cancer Unit of Apeksha Hospital.

Consultant Specialist Buddhika Somawardhana stated that the number of people currently living with blood cancers in the country is estimated to be between 15,000 and 18,000.

Despite the growing patient burden, Dr. Somawardhana pointed to a severe shortage of specialists in the field of blood cancer treatment.

According to him, only four specialist doctors are currently available in Sri Lanka to treat blood cancer patients nationwide.

The remarks highlight ongoing concerns regarding the country’s healthcare capacity to manage complex cancer-related illnesses and specialized treatment services.
