Sri Lanka Expects US$700 Million IMF Tranche on May 27

May 21, 2026

Anil Jayantha Fernando says the government is hopeful of receiving the next tranche of funding from the International Monetary Fund on May 27.

Speaking in Parliament of Sri Lanka today (21), the Deputy Minister stated that Sri Lanka expects the IMF Executive Board to approve the release of approximately US$700 million later this month.

According to Fernando, the government is continuing efforts to strengthen foreign exchange inflows through:

  • Exports
  • Foreign worker remittances
  • International financial assistance

He further stated that Sri Lanka is also expected to receive up to US$480 million from the Asian Development Bank during 2026.

In addition:

  • The World Bank is expected to provide US$150 million
  • Another affiliated institution is expected to provide an additional US$50 million

Deputy Minister Fernando noted that the government currently does not foresee any major difficulties in managing the country’s foreign exchange situation despite recent pressure on the Sri Lankan Rupee and rising import costs.
