Dinusha Thilanka says Sri Lanka plans to gradually digitize all documents related to the insurance sector under the ongoing vehicle insurance digitization initiative.
He made these remarks during a special media briefing held at the Department of Government Information Sri Lanka to educate the public about the new digital vehicle insurance card system.
According to Thilanka, physical vehicle insurance cards currently issued by insurance companies will eventually be completely discontinued.
Instead, customers will receive:
- Digital insurance cards
- Mobile-accessible insurance verification services
- QR code-based insurance authentication
Drivers will be able to access their digital insurance details through:
- Mobile phones
- Official websites
- QR codes
The Chairman stated that the authenticity of digital insurance cards can be verified at any time through the dedicated hotline number 1338.
Available Verification Methods
USSD Service
Users can:
- Dial *1338#
- Follow on-screen instructions
- Enter the vehicle number or insurance policy number
A confirmation message will then be sent within seconds indicating whether a valid insurance policy exists.
SMS Verification
Users can also:
- Send the vehicle number or insurance policy number via SMS to 1338
Hotline Support
After calling 1338:
- Users can select the relevant insurance company through automated voice guidance
- Connect directly with the insurer’s call centre
According to Dinusha Thilanka, the hotline system will operate:
- 24 hours a day
- 365 days a year
Authorities say the initiative aims to improve:
- Convenience for motorists
- Faster insurance verification
- Fraud prevention
- Digital transformation within the insurance sector in Sri Lanka.
