Modi’s Statement Could Impact Sri Lanka’s Tourism Sector, Warns Ravi Karunanayake

May 22, 2026

Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, has warned that recent remarks by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding limiting non-essential foreign travel could have implications for Sri Lanka’s economy, particularly the tourism sector.

Speaking at a media briefing, Karunanayake said there is a need to properly educate the public on the economic challenges facing the country and the possible external factors that could influence recovery efforts.

The MP stated that the current opposition is acting with the country’s interests in mind and is focusing on highlighting issues rather than engaging in protests or strikes.

He further said that whether in government or opposition, political parties have a responsibility to protect the people during difficult times.

Referring to calls reportedly made in India to reduce non-essential foreign travel in order to safeguard foreign exchange reserves and protect the value of the Indian rupee, Karunanayake warned that Sri Lanka could face indirect consequences.

According to the MP, such developments could potentially affect:

  • Tourist arrivals from India, Sri Lanka’s largest tourism source market
  • Passenger demand on air routes between India and Sri Lanka
  • Operations of airlines, including SriLankan Airlines

Karunanayake noted that the country must consider how it should respond if external developments begin affecting tourism and foreign exchange inflows.

He emphasized that Sri Lanka needs to prepare for changing regional economic conditions and adopt practical strategies to protect key sectors of the economy.
