June 1, 2026

The Government of Japan has provided financial assistance amounting to US$1.33 million to Sri Lanka to support freshwater fishermen affected by Cyclone Ditwah.

The official agreement was signed by Minister of Fisheries Ramalingam Chandrasekaran and Japanese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Akio Isomata.

According to officials, the assistance package is aimed at rebuilding livelihoods and strengthening income opportunities for communities impacted by the cyclone.

Under the initiative, 200 fish cages are scheduled to be established across 30 selected reservoirs in the Eastern Province to support freshwater aquaculture activities.

The program will also provide technical training for fishermen while supplying fish fingerlings and fish feed free of charge during the first cultivation cycle.

Authorities expect the project to support the recovery of affected fishing communities while improving sustainable inland fisheries development in the region.
