Health authorities say a total of 33,572 dengue cases and 19 related deaths have been reported across Sri Lanka so far this year, raising concerns over the continued spread of the mosquito-borne disease.
According to Community Health Specialist Dr. Thushani Dabare, 8,321 dengue cases were reported during the month of May alone.
The highest number of infections has been recorded from the districts of Colombo, Gampaha, and Kurunegala.
Dr. Dabare further stated that 72 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions have been identified as high-risk areas for dengue transmission.
According to health data, nearly half of all dengue infections reported this year have been recorded from the Western Province, which accounts for approximately 50 percent of total cases.
Meanwhile:
- The Southern Province accounts for around 16% of infections
- The Sabaragamuwa Province accounts for approximately 9% of reported cases
Health authorities continue to urge the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and maintain clean surroundings as part of ongoing dengue prevention efforts.
Officials have also warned that increased rainfall and changing weather patterns may contribute to further increases in dengue transmission in the coming months.
