Former United National Party Deputy Leader MP Ravi Karunanayake has rejected allegations that opposition parties are waiting for the country to collapse for political advantage.
Speaking to the media, the MP said he strongly disagrees with claims made by various groups suggesting that the opposition is hoping for economic or political failure.
“If someone says the opposition is waiting for the country to collapse, that person may not understand the realities of this country,” he said.
Karunanayake noted that some members of the public have questioned why the current opposition is not criticizing the government in the same manner as opposition groups did in previous years.
However, he argued that the present opposition has a clearer understanding of the complexities involved in governing and managing a country during difficult times.
The MP stated that the opposition does not gain anything merely through criticism and blame, adding that realities surrounding governance and economic management would eventually become clear.
He also referred to previous political statements regarding foreign exchange inflows, pointing out that some groups that once discouraged sending foreign currency to the country are now encouraging overseas workers to remit funds.
Karunanayake emphasized that the current opposition believes every dollar sent into the country is important at a time when strengthening foreign exchange inflows remains a national priority.
