Sri Lanka has recorded nearly 37,000 dengue cases so far this year, representing an increase of approximately 10,000 infections compared to the corresponding period in 2025, according to health authorities.
Director of the National Dengue Control Unit (NDCU), Dr. Kapila Kannangara, stated that nearly 50 percent of all reported dengue cases have originated from the Western Province.
According to official statistics, the Colombo District accounts for 22 percent of the total reported cases, followed by Gampaha District with 17 percent and Kalutara District contributing 6 percent.
Dr. Kannangara further noted that dengue mosquito breeding sites continue to be frequently identified in schools, government institutions, and places of worship, raising concerns about public compliance with preventive measures.
In response to the growing number of infections, the National Dengue Control Unit has launched a special mosquito control programme from today until June 10.
The programme will cover 14 districts and 72 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) divisions identified as high-risk areas.
Authorities stated that inspection teams will examine residences, government and private institutions, schools, religious sites, factories, construction sites, vacant lands, and other high-risk locations during the operation.
Officials also warned that red notices will be issued and legal action initiated against individuals and institutions found maintaining mosquito breeding grounds through negligence.
The national dengue control programme was officially launched at the Colombo Municipal Council premises as health authorities continue efforts to contain the spread of the disease.
