Fairly Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Forecast Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka

June 12, 2026

Showers or thundershowers are expected at times today in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara Eliya, according to the Department of Meteorology.

The Department stated that fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm is likely at some locations within these areas.

Several spells of showers are also expected in the Hambantota and Anuradhapura districts.

Meanwhile, showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and in the districts of Ampara and Batticaloa after 1.00 p.m.

Strong winds with speeds of approximately 40–50 kmph can be expected at times over the western slopes of the central hills, the Northern and North-Central provinces, and the districts of Hambantota and Trincomalee.

Fairly strong winds of around 30–40 kmph are also likely across other parts of the island.

The Department of Meteorology has urged the public to take adequate precautions to minimize damage caused by temporary localized strong winds, lightning, and heavy rainfall associated with thundershowers.

Residents in vulnerable areas are advised to remain vigilant and follow weather advisories issued by the relevant authorities, particularly in regions prone to flooding, strong winds, and landslides.
