Sri Lanka A Defeat India A in Thrilling Super Over to Top Tri-Nation Series Standings

June 16, 2026

Sri Lanka A recorded a dramatic Super Over victory against India A in the Tri-Nation One-Day Tournament, securing a crucial win that lifted them to the top of the points table with four points.

Batting first, India A were bowled out for 265 runs within their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Sri Lanka A produced an equally determined performance, finishing on 265 for 8 at the end of their innings to level the scores and force the match into a Super Over.

The contest was briefly overshadowed by controversy as match officials deliberated on whether conditions were suitable for a Super Over in the fading light. During the discussions, India A captain Tilak Varma was seen engaging in a heated exchange with the umpires regarding the decision.

Once the Super Over was confirmed, Avishka Fernando and Sahan Arachchige opened the batting for Sri Lanka A. On the final delivery of the over, the Indian bowler delivered a ball above waist height, which was called a no-ball by the umpire.

Reports indicate that several Indian players had already begun leaving the field when the decision was made. When the umpires instructed them to return for the additional delivery, another animated discussion reportedly took place between the Indian captain and the match officials.

Despite the interruption, Sri Lanka A completed the Super Over successfully, scoring 17 runs and setting India A a target of 18 runs for victory.

Chasing the target, India A opened with Suryansh Shedge and 15-year-old rising star Vaibhav Suryavanshi. The responsibility of bowling the decisive Super Over for Sri Lanka was handed to Kugadas Mathulan.

Mathulan delivered an outstanding over under pressure, restricting India A to just 9 runs. The Indian batters managed only a single boundary as Sri Lanka sealed an impressive eight-run victory in the Super Over.

The result strengthened Sri Lanka A’s position at the top of the tournament standings and highlighted the team’s composure in high-pressure situations.

Following the match, television footage appeared to show a brief verbal exchange between some Sri Lanka A players and India’s young batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi. However, no official complaints or disciplinary actions had been reported at the time of writing.
