Ajith P. Perera Warns of No-Confidence Motion Over Delay in Higher Court Appointments

June 17, 2026

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian and Attorney-at-Law Ajith P. Perera has warned that he will not hesitate to move a no-confidence motion against the government if the filling of eight existing vacancies in the higher judiciary continues to be delayed.

The Kalutara District MP made the remarks while participating in a political discussion on a private television channel.

Perera noted that although the opposition currently does not possess the parliamentary majority required to pursue an impeachment process against the President, it retains the legal and political ability to move a no-confidence motion against the government.

Responding to a question on whether such a motion would be accepted by the Speaker if submitted, the MP stated that he would consider the appropriate course of action at the relevant time.

Speaking further, Perera emphasized the importance of the judiciary in upholding the sovereignty of the people and maintaining the rule of law.

He argued that delays in appointing judges to higher courts are having a serious impact on the judicial system and could undermine the administration of justice.

“The sovereign power of the people is exercised through the judiciary, and Parliament bears responsibility for safeguarding that judicial authority,” he said.

The MP further stated that he had previously raised concerns regarding the issue at the Constitutional Council and had also highlighted the matter on three occasions in Parliament.

Perera urged the relevant authorities to take prompt action to fill the existing judicial vacancies, stressing that an effective and fully functioning judiciary is essential for maintaining public confidence in the legal system.
