Public Warned of Scam Involving Individuals Impersonating Public Health Inspectors

June 22, 2026

The Public Health Inspectors’ Union of Sri Lanka has warned the public about reports of individuals impersonating Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) and fraudulently collecting money from households and institutions.

Acting President of the Union, Upul Rohana, stated that the suspected fraudsters are exploiting ongoing dengue inspection programmes by falsely claiming that payments are required in connection with legal procedures and public health inspections.

He emphasized that Public Health Inspectors do not charge or accept money under any circumstances while carrying out their official duties.

“The public should not provide money to anyone claiming to be a Public Health Inspector. PHIs do not request or accept payments for inspections, legal action, or any other official service,” Rohana said.

The warning comes amid intensified dengue prevention and inspection activities being carried out across the country as health authorities work to curb the spread of the disease.

Rohana further advised members of the public to remain vigilant and verify the identity of officials visiting their homes or institutions.

He urged anyone who encounters a person claiming to be a Public Health Inspector and demanding money to immediately report the incident to the Police or the relevant authorities.

The Public Health Inspectors’ Union also called on the public to cooperate with legitimate dengue control and public health programmes while remaining cautious of individuals attempting to exploit these efforts for personal gain.

Authorities have stressed that public awareness and prompt reporting of such incidents are essential to preventing fraud and protecting communities from scams.
