Sri Lanka, U.S. Explore Joint Training and Security Cooperation

Sri Lanka and the United States have discussed measures to strengthen defence cooperation, with a focus on joint training, interoperability and addressing emerging security challenges.

Lieutenant General Joel JB Vowell, Deputy Commanding General of the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC), held separate meetings yesterday (September 30) with Deputy Minister of Defence Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd) and Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd).

According to the Ministry of Defence, the discussions focused on enhancing bilateral defence ties through increased joint training and interoperability, as well as improving both countries’ ability to respond effectively to crises and emerging security threats.

The meetings also provided an opportunity to exchange views on matters of mutual interest and explore further avenues for cooperation.

U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires David Myers, Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Matthew House, and other senior officials from the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Army Pacific also attended the meetings.
