Sri Lanka’s Dengue Death Toll Rises to 78

The number of dengue-related deaths reported in Sri Lanka so far this year has risen to 78, according to the National Dengue Control Unit.

A total of 100,871 dengue cases have been reported to date, with the case fatality rate recorded at 0.077%.

The Western Province accounts for 52.45% of the total cases, with 52,906 cases reported from the province.

At district level, Gampaha has recorded the highest number of cases at 21,377, followed by Colombo with 19,759 cases, Kandy with 7,689, Kalutara with 6,400 and Matara with 6,305.

According to monthly data, 151 dengue cases have been reported during the first few days of October, while 5,230 cases were recorded in September.

The highest monthly total was recorded in July, with 29,964 cases, followed by 21,533 cases in June and 10,155 cases in August.

At present, 37 Medical Officer of Health (MOH) areas have been identified as dengue high-risk zones.

Health authorities have urged the public to take immediate steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites and maintain clean surroundings to prevent the further spread of dengue.
