A four-member delegation led by Additional Solicitor General and President’s Counsel Azad Navavi will travel to Saudi Arabia next Tuesday to meet with lawyers and finalize a Supreme Court appeal seeking the release or reduction of the death sentence imposed on Sri Lankan national Anojan Sivarasa.
Sivarasa’s prison sentence for blasphemy was reportedly upgraded to the death penalty.
The delegation also includes President’s Counsel Faiszer Musthapha, President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma and Attorney-at-Law Hafeel Farisz.
The delegation is expected to meet Saudi authorities and explore possible legal avenues to resolve the matter.
Attorney Navavi told The Sunday Times that the delegation would meet representatives of the two law firms handling the case to finalize the documentation required for the Supreme Court proceedings.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has engaged the relevant law firms to handle the case.
Meanwhile, a parliamentary delegation is also scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia carrying an appeal for clemency from President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
