Authorities Receive Complaints Over Alleged Drug Sales Through Pharmacies, Deputy Minister Says

October 4, 2026

Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala says authorities have received information regarding the alleged sale of narcotic pills and other prohibited substances through or under the cover of pharmacies in Sri Lanka.

Speaking at the 11th anniversary event of the All Island Private Pharmacy Owners’ Association, Watagala said authorities had received numerous complaints from the public about the use of narcotic pills, including among young people and students.

He said certain pharmacies had reportedly become known as places where such pills could be obtained, while information had also been received that some individuals were using pharmacies as a cover for illegal drug-related activities.

The Deputy Minister further alleged that prohibited stimulants were being sold at certain establishments operating under the guise of Ayurvedic businesses.

Watagala said the Ministry of Public Security plans to launch a district-level programme to address the issue, including discussions with pharmacy owners in each district to prevent such activities.

He stressed that the allegations did not apply to the entire pharmacy sector and said authorities would work with pharmacy owners to identify and take action against those involved in illegal activities.

Watagala also emphasized that the government would enforce the law equally, regardless of an individual’s position or social status.
