Ravi Karunanayake, Member of Parliament and former Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), has urged the government to prioritise local businesses and the public when providing subsidies, rather than extending financial relief to foreign companies.
Karunanayake called on the government to ensure that fuel subsidies are not granted to foreign companies. He stated that if fuel subsidies are provided, they should be directed exclusively through the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
He further stressed the importance of protecting local resources and state institutions during the current economic challenges.
The MP emphasised that government support should benefit the local economy and the public, while preventing national funds from flowing unnecessarily to foreign companies.
