Former President Donald Trump has taken a decisive stride towards clinching the Republican Party nomination for the upcoming U.S. presidential election in November 2024, following a commanding victory in the party primary held in the state of New Hampshire, as reported by US media on Wednesday (24th).
With 70% of the votes tallied, the former president leads with 54.4%, while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley trails at 43.6%. Despite conceding defeat in New Hampshire, Ms. Haley has affirmed her commitment to continuing her campaign.
The electoral process in the United States involves each major party – Republican and Democratic – conducting elections in individual states, where party members cast their votes to select their preferred party nominees. The outcomes of these contests, known as caucuses or primaries, determine the popular nominees, and New Hampshire represents the second such crucial contest.
This victory in New Hampshire follows Trump’s earlier triumph in the state of Iowa a week ago, prompting all other contenders, with the exception of Ms. Haley, to withdraw from the race. Notably, Ms. Haley is striving to become the first woman to serve as president.
Incumbent President Joe Biden is anticipated to secure the Democratic Party nomination, despite facing multiple challengers.
