The Sri Lanka Navy has alerted the Combined Maritime Forces (CMF) in Bahrain, a multinational naval coalition dedicated to maritime security, following the capture of the Sri Lankan fishing vessel, “Lorenzo Putha 4,” by Somali pirates in international waters near Seychelles.
Naval Spokesman Captain Gayan Wickramasuriya confirmed the notification to CMF, further disclosing that nations equipped with advanced naval technology are being briefed on the unfolding situation.
Director General of Fisheries, Susantha Kahawatta, has declared that all pertinent Sri Lankan authorities have been notified and are actively monitoring the developments.
The hijacking reportedly occurred after January 12th, when “Lorenzo Putha 4” departed from the port of Dikovita. The details regarding the crew and their current condition remain shrouded in uncertainty.
The Department of Fisheries has confirmed the loss of communication with the abducted Sri Lankan fishing vessel under the control of Somali pirates.
Director General Susantha Kahawatta emphasized that the abducted crew, currently held aboard the Lorenzo Putha 4, has not established contact with Sri Lankan officials, and no demands have been made by the abductors to the government.
It is believed that six Sri Lankan fishermen are currently on board the seized vessel.
Despite the communication breakdown, Kahawatta reassured the public that “all measures are being taken” to ensure the safe return of the fishermen.
