Former Deputy Leader of the United National Party, MP Ravi Karunanayake, says recent statements made by the Governor of the Central Bank have raised questions about the credibility and independence of the institution.
Speaking to the media, Karunanayake stated that the time has come for the United National Party and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to unite, arguing that public expectations now demand broader political cooperation.
He further warned that if the leaders of the two parties fail to work together, they risk political rejection.
Commenting on the economic situation, the MP questioned the consistency of statements issued by the Central Bank Governor.
Karunanayake pointed out that on March 7, the Governor had stated that the country had sufficient financial strength, that the rupee remained strong, and that authorities were prepared to face any challenge.
However, he questioned how the institution’s credibility could be maintained if a significantly different position is presented only two months later.
“If completely different statements are made within two months, what is the value of the institution’s independence?” he asked.
The MP also alleged that the Central Bank is now weakening the banking sector and claimed that responsibility for the depreciation of the rupee lies largely with monetary authorities.
“The depreciation of the rupee is entirely in the hands of the Central Bank,” he said.
Referring to his experience as a former Finance Minister, Karunanayake stated that previous governments had faced similar economic criticism but had attempted to respond through practical measures.
He further stressed that economic challenges require practical solutions rather than contradictory messaging.
