Election Commission Extends Key Deadlines for Local Government Polls

The Election Commission has extended several key deadlines for the upcoming local government elections, with the official polling date to be determined after the nomination process.

Elections Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake announced that the deadline for postal vote applications, initially set for March 12, has been extended until midnight on March 17. Similarly, the deadline for depositing election deposits has been pushed to 12.00 noon on March 19.

The nomination period will begin on March 17 and continue daily from 8.30 a.m. to 4.15 p.m. until March 19, with a final acceptance window open until 12.00 noon on March 20.

Ratnayake emphasized that the Election Commission will announce the polling date only after reviewing objections and other related matters following the submission of nominations. However, he confirmed that the elections will take place within a period of 35 to 49 days after nominations are accepted.
