Bimal Ratnayake says the government plans to begin construction of an electric train system for Colombo and its suburbs in early 2027.
The Minister noted that the project received approval following discussions with Anura Kumara Dissanayake and is expected to play a major role in transforming the country’s public transport system.
Construction is scheduled to commence in the first few months of 2027, with initial focus on developing core railway infrastructure, including tracks and operational systems.
The proposed network will cover key commuter routes from Colombo to Ragama, Makumbura, and Panadura, targeting daily travellers from suburban and surrounding areas.
Addressing concerns about electricity supply, Minister Ratnayake said the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to modernise urban transport and reduce congestion.
The project is expected to take approximately three to four years to complete and will involve advanced technology and expertise. The government plans to invite both local and international tenders, while also training staff of Sri Lanka Railways to operate the system.
In addition, railway stations are set to be upgraded alongside the project to improve efficiency, reliability, and passenger comfort.
Once operational, the electric train system is expected to significantly reduce travel times, enabling commuters to reach Colombo from suburban areas within 20 to 30 minutes.
Authorities also expect the project to encourage a shift from road to rail transport, helping to ease traffic congestion in the capital.
