The Chief Observer of the European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission, Jose Ignacio Sanchez Amor, a Member of the European Parliament, recently met with Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne at Parliament.
During the meeting, the Chief Observer extended his congratulations to the Speaker and the new government. He also presented the final report of the Presidential Election Observation Mission – 2024 to the Speaker.
Mr. Sanchez Amor commended the democratic conduct of the presidential election and highlighted the crucial role played by the Election Commission, emphasizing the need to further strengthen the Commission. He also lauded the increased representation of women in the current Parliament.
In response, Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne expressed his gratitude to the EU Election Observation Mission for their insights and collaboration. He reiterated the government’s commitment to establishing transparent, corruption-free governance grounded in democratic principles.
The Speaker also announced plans to organize the country’s first-ever conference for Members of Parliament with disabilities, showcasing a commitment to inclusivity in governance.
The Secretary General of Parliament, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, also participated in the meeting.
