Former Chief Executive Officer of SriLankan Airlines, Kapila Chandrasena, has been found dead at a residence in Colpetty, according to Sri Lanka Police.
The development came shortly after the Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued an order for his arrest and production before court over an alleged violation of bail conditions.
The arrest warrant was issued yesterday by Chief Magistrate Asanga S Bodharagama following submissions made by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
According to CIABOC, Chandrasena had allegedly paid two individuals Rs. 15,000 each to act as bail signatories and furnish sureties after he was granted bail earlier this week.
Chandrasena had been arrested on March 12 in connection with allegations linked to the purchase of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines in 2013.
Investigators allege that he conspired to accept a bribe of US$16 million and received €1.45 million through a Singapore bank account connected to a company allegedly established in Brunei under his wife’s name.
He had been released on bail on May 5 under conditions that included a cash bail of Rs. 500,000 and three sureties of Rs. 1 million each.
Following allegations that the bail conditions had been improperly fulfilled, CIABOC requested the court to revoke bail and remand the suspect under provisions of the Bail Act No. 30 of 1997 and the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Police investigations into Chandrasena’s death are ongoing.
