Ravi Karunanayake says the current government came to power promising to correct weaknesses in state administration, but has so far failed to produce meaningful results.
Addressing the media, the former United National Party Deputy Leader stated:
“The government has failed to show results despite the drumbeat.”
Karunanayake argued that administrative weaknesses continue to exist despite earlier promises that political interference in public administration would be reduced.
According to the MP:
- Fear and uncertainty now exist within the administrative system
- Officials are reluctant to make decisions
- Problems within state institutions are gradually becoming visible
He further claimed that several additional issues remain undisclosed and said:
- Honest officials within the Ministry of Finance Sri Lanka had informed him about ongoing administrative difficulties
Referring to his previous experience as a minister, Karunanayake stated that managing the country’s financial and administrative systems is extremely challenging.
He also stressed that governance should focus on:
- Correcting mistakes honestly
- Reducing burdens on the public
- Avoiding political misinformation
According to the MP:
“The burden is on the people, not the government.”
He further said that even if opposition parties return to power in the future, they should govern transparently and avoid creating problems through false promises or political distortion.
The remarks come amid growing public debate in Sri Lanka regarding:
- Government performance
- Public sector administration
- Economic management
- Political accountability amid ongoing economic pressures
