Government Reviews “Aswesuma” Welfare Programme to Enhance Inclusivity

The government has commenced a thorough review of the “Aswesuma” welfare benefits programme to ensure inclusivity and fairness, Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning Harshana Suriyapperuma announced in Parliament today (January 21).

The Deputy Minister stated that efforts are underway to identify eligible individuals who have not yet received relief through the programme.

“To improve the relief assistance process, the information collected through the system is being reassessed. Appeals from a significant number of people have been received and will be carefully reviewed following established procedures,” Suriyapperuma explained.

He also revealed plans to increase the allocation for welfare benefits in the 2025 budget, surpassing the funding provided in 2024. This move underscores the government’s commitment to addressing gaps in the current system and providing greater support to those in need.
