National List Member of Parliament M.S. Abdul Wahid has resigned from Parliament with effect from today (14).
Abdul Wahid, who represents the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, formally submitted his resignation to Acting Secretary-General of Parliament Hansa Abeyratne.
In a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Election Commission, Abeyratne confirmed that Abdul Wahid had resigned from his position as a Member of Parliament effective September 14.
Following the resignation, the Acting Secretary-General officially informed the Election Commission that a vacancy had arisen in the Tenth Parliament.
The notification was issued under Section 64(5) of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No. 1 of 1981.
The Election Commission will now take the necessary legal steps to fill the vacant National List seat.
