The Sri Lanka Navy has successfully recovered Fast Attack Craft P 4447, which sank following an accident off the coast of Angulana on August 15 while on a routine patrol.
The vessel was raised from a depth of approximately 80 feet on September 11 and subsequently towed safely to the Colombo Dockyard premises.
A joint operation involving the Navy, Air Force, Police and local fishermen from Angulana began immediately after the accident and resulted in the rescue of all 11 naval personnel on board.
The body of the vessel’s Executive Officer, who went missing in the incident, was recovered on September 4.
Navy diving and engineering teams carried out the recovery operation in several stages despite rough sea conditions and the hazardous underwater environment.
The Navy’s mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering divisions were involved in the operation, with technical assistance provided by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and Colombo Dockyard PLC.
The Navy described the recovery as a milestone that demonstrated the professionalism and technical expertise of its diving and engineering personnel.
